In our current times and in light of the whole Covid19- pandemic, I feel it has become important to do further research in becoming sustainable on your own and in which ways you will be able to do so.
Possible ways of creating a sustainable way of living are:
- Implementing more forms of sustainable architecture.
Sustainable architecture is a type of architecture that seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings through efficiency and the moderation of the use of materials, energy, development space and the ecosystem at large.
Sustainability in architecture can be achieved by implementing innovative ideas into designs. When a house/building gets designed, the options for wind turbines, solar panels, recycled waste and waste water management systems should be available at large. It is possible to create and install most of this yourself. example of this being people who have decided to go live off the grid.
Essential elements that can make a building sustainable is by using enough insulation, design the building in airtightness, use the buildings thermal mass to the best effect, make the most use of the natural light that filters into the building and choose green and sustainable material.
- Looking into food resources that are sustainable.
There are a few food resources that get classified under being sustainable and available the majority of the year. Sustainable food resources include different types of grasses eg: wheat, barley, oats and rice, it also includes beans and peas, leafy green vegetables eg: kale and spinach and other fruits eg: pomegranates and olives. Most food can also be preserved for future use. Creating your own vegetable garden is one of the ideal ways of sustainability.
- Using talents and passion as an extra source of income.
When the need arises and the economy has taken a bit of a dip, there are ways to generate an income which is beneficial to yourself and to others. You can sell the produce that you harvest at local farmers markets or in close knit groups. And if the opportunity is there, you can start your own bee farm and start making honey and then sell it.
- Harvesting rain water.
Rain water harvesting is the collection and storage of rain. The rain is redirected to a tank, cistern or a deep pit. A net can be used to collect dew and fog as well.
By harvesting rain water, it reduces the strain placed on the municipal water supply. It reduces erosion, property damage and contamination by reducing the majority of runoff from businesses and homes.
Thrive in a failing economy by creating a life of sustainability.
