AFRICAN ARCHITECTURE – PRE & POST COLONIALISM

Colonialism is a subject that has been introduced to us as children in
school, how it affected people, cultures, ancient traditions and especially the traditional African architecture. The journey from the indigenous mud huts to the Cape Dutch movement has been a long road of growth but also  controversy. It is sad to say that unfortunately the indigenous architecture in Africa has been diluted through the years due to colonization.

There have been statements that the original African architecture styles
have been considered uncivilized, but I could not disagree more. The
traditional African architecture was a beautiful mixture of nature, culture and ancient skills, and that is why it was so special and still is to this day.

Me and one of my colleagues will be doing research on this subject trying to prove that pre-colonial African architecture was effective, from the environmental sensitivity, sense of community and security to craftsmanship and sense of function over status.

Stay tuned to see what our research delivers!
